Soldiers Three: The Story of The Gatsby in Black and White by Rudyard Kipling 1903
Title: Soldiers Three and other stories Author: Rudyard Kipling Publisher: London: Macmillan and Co Publication Date: 1903 Format: Hardback without dust jacket Condition: This book is in good condition for its age other than some minor signs of wear, particularly around the top of the spine. Some water damage on the cover and an inscription from 1905.
This vintage book tells the tales of three soldiers, Privates Terence Mulvaney, Stanley Ortheris, and John Learoyd, who had also appeared previously in the collection Plain Tales from the Hills. The book reveals a side of the British Tommy in Afghanistan rarely seen in the Twilight of the British Empire. The soldiers comment on their betters, act the fool, but cut straight to the rawness of war in the mid-east as the British began to loosen their Imperial hold.
