Reader's note

This 1952 edition of Simenon’s Maigret Travels South contains two stories; Liberty Bar and The Madman of Bergerac. In Liberty Bar, Maigret is taking some time to sit in the sun. However William Brown, a degenerate Australian, has been stabbed in the back, and no one apparently can fill in the gap. The Madman of Bergerac introduces Maigret jumping, quite literally, into a [provincial French town terrorized by a manic murderer. His investigations surfer hardly at all from his conducting them, wounded, from a hospital bed, and he unearths a sequence of scandals which quickly give rise to more and more drama.
