Reader's note

Love a crime novel? This 1952 edition of Simenon’s Havoc by Accident would be a lovely vintage edition to add to your reading list! It contains two stories, Talatala and The Brenton Sisters. Talatala, which means ‘the white-man-with-the-spectacles’, was the name given by the natives to a French coffee planter who had made his lonely home in the Belgian Congo. He led a conventional solitary life until one day an aeroplane made a forced landing close by and its owner, a sophisticated English peeress, who came to claim his hospitality, completely unsettled him. In The Breton Sisters, a French fisherman, driving home from a spree in a nearby town, knocked over a small boy who subsequently died. Too frightened to see the police or his shrewd protective sisters, he determined to soothe his own conscience by unobtrusively recompensing the boy’s mother. Both of these stories are novels of crime but they have no detective, no mystery and no problem. The crimes are personal rather than legal - sudden irresponsible actions and their clear, inescapable consequences.
