Reader's note

Those who find pleasure in the deft touches of this most observant and gently ironic of novelists will find this book a rewarding comparison with Pride and Prejudice. Both are stories contrasting the characters of two sisters. Both are women of recognizably individual character, with the family traits of the Bennets on the one hand and on the other the Dashwoods. Sense and Sensibility has ‘moral judgment tempered by sympathy - perhaps a more poignant sympathy than Jane Austen was ever again to evoke for headstrong folly. Jane Austen saw life as an episode of paradox and contrast, and her astringent mind exposed the many subtleties to be observed within it. That is why she can always command pleasure in successive readings, for these only confirm the delicate perfection with which she drew her portraits.
