Reader's note

Dale Kramer's history of one of the world's famous newspaper is 'volcanic' to read according to Alistair Cooke from the Manchester guardian. It details the life and exploits of one Harold Wallace Ross, former editor of the New Yorker and quite the personality. Chapter 2's title 'Rise and Fall of a Promising Hobo' demonstrates the humour of this book and in this chapter, the editor's early life is described - It was the heyday of the Tramp newspapermen. The term was not one of derogation. They were a proud, even haughty race, and they set themselves a part. Freedom was their watchword, authority their mortal enemy. - find out how one who was so used to having a life on the road became one of the most powerful journalists in America.
