Reader's note

James’s life could hardly be more horrible, walled up in a queer, ramshackle house on top of a high hill on the coast of England with his two beastly aunts, Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker. There are no toys and no friends to play with, and certainly no trips or treats, nothing but jobs, fetching and carrying and being called ‘you disgusting little beast’. Then something magic happens. The fruitless peach tree in the garden grows one magnificent peach. It is is almost the size of a house! Once it is famous the aunts send James out to clear up the rubbish from sightseers, and James finds his way inside the peach into a strange room which holds many strange (but friendly) creatures!
