Reader's note

A wonderful 1968 edition of Poetry of the Forties, introduced and edited by Robin Skelton. The forties in England began with war and ended with social revolution. The social structure which provided the poets of the thirties with their themes of criticism and anxiety was altered, first by violence and then by statute. It was a period of crisis and transition, and the poetry of the decade is filled with themes of uncertainty and romance. Much of this work does not survive these times; it described and satisfied psychological needs peculiar to an environment that no longer exists, and, as a consequence, many of the poets found notable by those years now appear to be dismal failures.
