Reader's note

To most of us hot water is simply cold water under the influence of heat. But to P. G. Wodehouse it seems to be some elaborate omelette… possibly a femmelette. Using the stately Château Blissac, St Rocque, Brittany, as his bowl he breaks a ripe medley of eggs before beginning to stir. There’s J. Wellington Gedge, reluctantly saddling up as an American Ambassador to France; Mrs Gedge, his trainer; Packy Franklyn, high-tailing it after a damsel in distress; ‘Veek’ (the Vitcomte de Blissac), and an improbable chorus of novelists, prohibitionists, con men, and safe crackers. Each has his particular fish to fry.
