Reader's note

Getting off the mark, as the author himself says ‘with the smooth swiftness of a jack rabbit surprised while lunching’, P G Wodehouse here plunges us at once into the toils of the Machaivelian plot at Belper Castle. We meet the Earl’s sister, bent on pairing off her stepson, Reginald, with her niece, Lady Patricia Maud. (But Maud prefers Geoffrey Raymond.) We meet the young Lord Belpher, cantering to the starting-gate of his ‘twenty first’. We meet the butler, Keggs, who is doing nicely on the days when the castle is open to the public, and George Bevan, a quite unacceptable composer with designs on Maud. And, of course, we are introduced to the head gardener, frowning morosely into a can of whale oil solution. For this is the seventh Earl of Marshmoreton himself, dealing summarily with the thrips. And then away we go, holding our sides.
