Reader's note

The first edition of Oxford Life was published five years ago. Since, as Balsdon says, there has not recently been a five year period in which ‘even in Oxford, life has stood still’, he has taken the opportunity of bringing the book up to date. He points out that there are three new men’s Colleges; the George Restaurant, resort of all that was happy in the twenties, is now no more; the wisteria in St Edmund Hall is now dead. There is now an age limit for dons; there have been changes in the scholarship system; the Historic Buildings Appeal has been launched, and already Oxford buildings have acquired a new face. Balsdon has made these other necessary changes. Some sections have been rewritten, minor corrections made to bring the book up to date, and an appendix has been added, all contributing, of course, to this lively picture of Oxford Life.
