Reader's note

This delightful edition of Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen is a perfect addition to any library. Though Jane Austen first sold Northanger Abbey to a publisher in 1803, it did appear in print until 1817, when it was posthumously published in the same volumes as Persuasion. Subtly mocking gothic conversations, Northanger Abbey is the story of Catherine Morland, a well-to-do clergyman’s daughter whose imagination runs away with her during a visit to the medieval home of the Tilneys, a family she becomes acquainted with at Bath. Increasingly convinced that General Tinley, the father of her soon-to-be betrothed, is a brutal criminal, Catherine is chagrined when her suspicions - which owe more to her love of gothic novels than to her gifts of deceptions - are discovered by her hosts. Clever and complex, Northanger Abbey contains the seeds of Jane Austen’s genius for depicting the intrinsic hypocrisy and humour of society. A gem among a bounty of out of print, rare and stunning vintage books in our second hand bookstore.
