Reader's note

Simenon's writings are always a classy and welcome addition to any bookshelf. It is raining in Paris. Inspector Maigret’s temper is not improved by the continuous companionship of Inspector Pyke, from Scotland Yard, who has come over to study French detective methods. However, routine is disturbed by a telephone call from the Mediterranean island of Porquerolles; an old tramp has been murdered ,the night after he suprised everyone by talking of his friend Maigret. Maigret is glad to leave the greyness of Paris for the sunshine of Porquerolles, even if Inspector Pyke has to accompany him. The small island with its limited number of suspects may be a convention in detective fiction: but only Simenon cloud create the atmosphere of square and cafe and brilliant swa so realistically that the reader, as well as the characters, is affected by the lotus-eating diseases of ‘Porquerolles’. This is a lovely classic story that would make a wonderful addition to any home collection.
