Reader's note

Mr Petre was undoubtedly a financial magnate at whose name the stock markets of the world wobbled. And the Englishman in American clothes, who had landed at Southampton from New York was undoubtedly Mr Petre. Indeed, it was the only thing about which he had no doubt, that his name was Petre. Otherwise his memory was a blank… His face was saved, however, and a number of new fortunes amassed through the kind offices of Charlie Terrard, who had frank blue eyes, frank yellow hair, and a future: a future much enhanced in his own view by his success in capturing business from the great John Kosciucko Petre.
