Reader's note

Enjoy another piece of classic literary history with this rare, vintage book by Lady Fortescue. This book was originally written when Lady Fortescue was recovering from pneumonia. As she states in her prologue - As I lay inert and feverish, in my bed, enduring the sultry atmosphere of a heat wave in England, I closed my eyes and let my thoughts drift to our bergerie perched upon a plateau of the Hautes Alpes. Once more I saw the peak of the majestic Meije, tinted rose colour by the sinking sun, guarding the deep-blue glacier; heard again the distant roar of mountain torrents, the ecstasy of soaring larks, and the tolling of cow bells; sniffed the intoxicating fragrance of Alpine flowers drifting through that crystal air, cool and sweet with the smell of virgin snow, until, refreshed and comforted, I fell asleep' - beautiful imagery that sets the tone for this tale. This book is a must-read and a great addition to any bookshelf.
