Reader's note

In Maigret in Montmartre the action centres round a small boite de nuit named ‘Picratt’s’. The striptease girl informs the police that she has overhead two men planning to murder ‘the Countess’. Shortly afterwards she is found murdered herself. The subsequent investigations, conducted by Maigret and the lugubrious and jealous Inspector Lognon, involve a second murder and a chase which nearly removes Maigret from any further detective activities. The revelations of vice, perversion and drug addiction disgust Maigret but his feeling for the case makes him stay in Montmartre where the action is fast and exciting. The atmosphere of the neon-lit night life is reproduced with the vividness of which Simenon alone has the secret.
