Reader's note

Bovery took Flaubert six years to write. When it first appeared it was threatened with legal suppression on grounds of immorality. But Flaubert wrote about the life he knew, and having chosen a subject familiar to him he thought about it for a long time in order to perfect its form and style. It is a vivid picture of French provincial life of the nineteenth century and of the kind of society to which the writer belonged. The book is full of observation, of understanding of the motives that actuate men and women, and has a central character as fully developed as any in the whole realm of literature.
