Reader's note

Colour your bookshelf with a spot of yellow and add this 1956 edition of Lucinda: The Painted Bell to your home library! Sensitive, imaginative, eight-year-old Lucinda accompanies her artist parents on their painting holiday to a village high in the Austrian Tyrol, and finds on every hand in that lovely region of misty slopes, tumbling streams, flowering meadows, and flower-bedecked chalets material in plenty for her fantasies of enchantment. She becomes the firm favourite of 'Grossvater' Stoppel and between them they hatch an altruistic plot to help the Stoppel family, with whom Lucinda is staying. This is a simple little story, charmingly told. As always, Rosalie Fry's illustrations are delightful.
