Reader's note

Louisa May Alcott grew up to struggle to help her family, and at the age of fifteen began to keep a small school in a barn, and earn a little. Her first story was published when she was twenty, and brought in the equivalent of an English pound. Everything she earned by writing, sewing, or teaching she spent on her family. When she was twenty-three things began to improve. A book of hers sold well, and her sister Anna married happily, Louisa went off to the American Civil War as a nurse but was soon invalided home. SHe went to Europe a few years later, and then came her great success: the publication of ‘Little Women’, in 1868, which she wrote in two months.
