Reader's note

This three book collection includes the titles Cider with Rosie, As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning and A Rose for Winter. Cider with Rosie puts on record the England we have traded for the petrol engine. Recalling life in a remote Cotswold village some fifty years ago, Laurie Lee coveys the semi-peasant spirit of a thousand years old tradition. As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning tells the story of a young man in 1934 who, knowing one Spanish phrase, decides to see Spain. Thirty years later Lee has captured the atmosphere of the Spain he saw with all the freshness and beauty of a young man’s vision, creating a lyrical and lucid picture of the beautiful and violent country that was to involve him inextricably. The last book in this collection, A Rose for Winter, tells the story of Lee when he returns to Andalusian after fifteen years to find a country broken by Civil War. But the totems of Spain survive, the Virgin in agony, the thrilling flamenco wail, the pride in poverty, the gypsy intensity in grey slums… the paradoxes deep in the fiery bones of Spain. This collection would make the perfect gift for a Laurie Lee lover this festive season.
