Reader's note

This is the story of a modern St. Augustine. Francis Sable, distinguished and successful writer of the ‘twenties, ‘fades out’ in the early ‘thirties; the novel is the story of what happened to him. The press carried no report of his death, but in 1945 a Jesuit father of the same name died in the West of Ireland. The setting of the story is literary Left-Bank Paris of the nineteen-twenties and early ‘thirties, Austria, and Connemara. One of Miss Mannin’s most powerful and moving stories, Late Have I Loved Thee constitutes an absorbing character study.
