Reader's note

This delightful edition of Journey’s End by R. C. Sherriff is a perfect addition to any drama-lover’s library. The first performance of Journey’s End was the prelude to an immense stage success. The play had previously been rejected by most of the theatre managements in London; some thought that the public did not want to hear about war, others that a play without women would not be popular. At last it was given a single Sunday evening performance by the Incorporated Stage Society in December, 1928. Laurence Olivier, then only twenty-one years old, played Stanhope on that occasion. In the audience was an actor, Maurice Browne, who recognised the play’s quality and undertook to produce it at the Savoy Theatre, where it ran for two years. Everyone who saw it must remember the profound impression it made. Its young author, hitherto unknown, was suddenly famous; the play was translated into every European language and performed all over the world. Although R. C. Sherriff has since written several other successful plays, a few novels, and screen plays for some of the best-known films of our time, his name is still most widely associated with his first great triumph, Journey’s End.
