Reader's note

In this lovely volume are two of John Steinbeck’s short novels, The Pearl and Burning Bright. The Pearl is the story of Kino, a fisherman, whose wife has just had her first baby. They are desperately poor, and the child is stung by a scorpion and needs the skilled attention of a doctor, whose fee Kino cannot afford. Burning Bright introduces something of a new method in writing; it is what the author calls ‘a play-novelette.’ In his interesting foreword to it he explains that by lifting the dialogue from the novel he made a play,. And he claims that the work is both ‘a’ play that is easy to read and a short novel that can be played.’
