Reader's note

A wonderful first edition of Jephthah and His Daughter by Lion Feuchtwanger, published in 1958! This story is one of the most deeply moving of all time. In three thousand years the conception of so great a sacrifice has never lost its hold on the minds of men; and Shakespeare himself, who has so few allusions to Biblical figures, poignantly refers no less than three times to Jephthah and the terrible consequences of his vow. But it is not merely the thought of victory in battle won at the cost of a loved one's life that has fascinated succeeding ages. Beyond the feeling of pity for Jephthah, caught in the toils if an oath he dare not break, is a dupe , uneasy at the idea of a man bargaining face to face with his god, and yet more at the idea of a god willing to accept the killing of an innocent girl in payment.
