Reader's note

Pride and Prejudice revealed Jane Austen as a literary genius of the rarest quality. Sir Walter Scott refers to ‘the exquisite touch which renders ordinary commonplace things and characters interesting’; and a recent biographer has aptly termed ‘celestial brightness’ the perfection of the novel’s charm. Elizabeth Bennet, the delightful heroine, is as irresistible today as she was to Robert Louis Stevenson, who said that when she opened her mouth he wanted to go down on his knees. And her sister is most likely based on Jane Austen’s joy in her own sister Cassandra. With its entertaining situations and sparkling dialogue, it is as topical as when it drew astonished admiration of readers of taste in the early nineteenth century.
