Reader's note

It is a moot point whether greater enjoyment will be obtained from reading ‘Emma’ for, say, the tenth than for the first time. For ‘Emma’ might almost be described as a connoisseur’s book, that is to say, in Jane Austen’s delicate and inimitable art, there revealed in its richest and most perfect form. And what a feast awaits the new - and old - reader! To make or renew acquaintance with Miss Bates, Mr Woodhouse, Mrs Elton, and above all with Emma herself! Emma the arch-planner, Emma the know-all, Emma whom to know is to laugh at, and to laugh at, is to love.
