Reader's note

A big, bright and beautiful edition of Jane Austen’s Emma! This yellow vintage edition was published in 1971 and has a delightful illustrated dust-jacket design! "I am going to take heroin whom no one but myself will much like." So said Jane Austen when she was planning this book. In the event, however, most critics have considered this her finest and most mature book, in spite of the popular reputation of Pride and Prejudice. It also had the distinction of beginning the book that was dedicated - by Royal invitation - to the Prince Consort. This came about by the merest change in that while Miss Austen was nursing her brother Henry through a dangerous fever in 1815 he was attended by one of the Prince Regent's physicians. Her presence in London was then made known to His Royal Highness who instructed his librarian to invite her to Carlton House and to inform her that she could, if she wished, dedicate her next novel to the prince.
