Reader's note

A more descriptive title for Jane Austen’s Emma might well be ‘The Education of Emma Woodhouse,’ for it is a novel about a young woman’s discovery of her own selfishness, and how she learns to cope with it. Emma’s education is not primarily an intellectual but a moral one. But because Emma is clever she can discern her situation, once the time comes, far more clearly than an unintelligent person could. In Emma, Jane Austen, one of the world’s greatest novelists, shows us not only a person trapped in her own prejudices; she also shows us the various stages by which that person - with the help of a mentor - begins to emerge.
