Reader's note

If you haven't read this lesser known Tolkien fantasy, then you're really missing out. Farmer Giles of Ham is a fairy story was acclaimed by discerning critics as possessing an imaginative vitality as rare as genius. Rather than being a fairy story of any usual kind, it is an imaginative history of the distant and marvellous past. Its scene is the valley of the Thames and the island of Britain while it was 'still happily divided into many kingdoms' in the times before King Arthur. The imagination and atmosphere of this enchanting tale are best captured when it is read aloud and it will take many listeners to a magical and ancient past.
