Reader's note

Cincinnatus is a political prisoner condemned, in the opening sentence of the book, to death for no crime that one can make out but simply because he is a man, and cannot, in spite of his desire to avoid trouble, prevent himself from at times behaving as an individual with thoughts, desires, hopes of his own. Throughout his imprisonment, which lasts the length of the book, he fights his fear, reviews his former life, and watches the scene of his cell turned into a stage round which strut the puppet figures of the director of the prison, the warder, Marthe, the wife of Cincinnatus, Emmie, the daughter of the director, and others…
