Reader's note

In the words of the author this story tells of the “Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World by Lemuel Gulliver, first Surgeon and then a Captain of several ships.” In the first part, Gulliver is shipwrecked on the coast of Lilliput, a country of pygmies. Subsequently, he finds himself in Brobdingnag inhabited by giants of tremendous stature. In his third voyage, he is driven to Laputa, where men forget all practical sense in the fantastical pursuit of speculative philosophy. Finally, Gulliver visits the land of the Houyhnhnms, a race of intelligent, virtuous horses, served by a degenerate human race, the Yahoos. Gulliver's Travels has the rare merit of appealing to both young and old as a powerful satire on man and his institutions, and as a fascinating tale of travels in fantasy.
