A 1953 edition of Guide To The Stars by Hector Macpherson. 'This is a popular science book for boys and girls and their parents. The idea behind the book is an exciting and fascinating one - to show how many of the major discoveries in chemistry were made by young men or women in their teens and twenties, sometimes with home-made apparatus and in opposition to accepted ideas. The book describes the early life and struggles of a number of brilliant young chemists and some of their epoch-making experiments. We read of Sir Humphry Davy, an apothecary's apprentice, becoming Director of the Laboratory of the Royal Institution at the age of twenty-two and of his discoveries there; and how Michael Faraday, a bookseller's apprentice, was appointed assistant in the same laboratory and, within three years was making discoveries which rivalled those of Sir Humphry himself.
