Reader's note

Published in 1887 the year of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, Great Britain and Her Queen by Annie E. Keeling gives a history of Victoria's reign with chapters from her early life, throughout her reign and ending with a summary of the conflicts of the century, with unrest in Europe, the Crimean War, the second assassination of a United States President, 'Indian horrors', Waterloo, 'hateful terrorism', 'plague, pestilence, famine' etc. Keeling ends with these parting words:

'Let us rejoice with trembling, in our year of Jubilee; let us remember, with all gratitude, how we have been spared hitherto; whom too often in pride and power, in selfish satisfaction with our own achievements and our own prosperity, we forget. Ever increasing wealth is balanced by the most terrible poverty, and its affluence of intellectual and spiritual light by the grossest heathen darkness. Let us see to it that our country perish not like so many other mighty empires, dragged down by its own over swollen greatness.'

Sentiments that ring true today. Grab this rare antique while you can! A gem among a bounty of out of print, rare and stunning vintage books on our second hand bookstore.
