Reader's note

Our vintage books make beautiful literary gifts. The Honorary Consul is a tantalizing thriller and would make a lovely gift for you or your favourite bookworm. The Honorary Consul is a novel by Graham Greene, published in 1973. Greene considered it one of his favourite works. It is a story of the interdependence of four people — a half ‐ English, half ‐ Paraguayan, unmarried doctor living in a small city in northern Argentina; the aging and alcoholic honorary British consul of that city; the consul's young wife (a former local whore), and a Catholic priest who is now second‐in‐command of a group of Paraguayan guerrillas. “malnutrition is much safer for the rich than starvation. Starvation makes a man desperate. Malnutrition makes him too tired to raise a fist. The Americans understand that well – the aid they give us makes just that amount of difference. Our people do not starve – they wilt.” A gem among a bounty of stunning vintage books and classic novels on our online used bookstore.
