Reader's note

This magnificent but controversial novel has become a classic since its publication in 1936. It brings the drama of the American Civil War and the Reconstruction of the South vividly to life as it tells the story of Scarlett O’Hara, the spoiled and selfish daughter of a wealthy plantation owner, who arrives at young womanhood just in time to see the Civil War sweep away the life for which her upbringing had prepared her. After the fall of Atlanta, she returns to the plantation and by stubborn shrewdness saves her home from both Sherman and the carpetbaggers. But in the process a change comes over Scarlett; she hardens. She has neared starvation and she vows never to be hungry again. And in the turmoil of the Reconstruction she fights to make good her vow.
