Reader's note

‘Among the many things which I put away for the duration of the war were the proofs of this book. But publishers are an obdurate race, and I was soon asked to return them for publication. I pointed out that I had other things to do, and that the pre-war title was, to say the least of it, tactless now that half of London had been recruited and trained with the object of preventing the other half from becoming ghosts. Still I was asked to return them, and I began to think that perhaps it might be interesting to launch this little book, because its theme is something we should keep in mind: the continuity of London’s existence.’
