Reader's note

This stylish black edition of George Orwell's The Road to Wigan Pier, from publisher Penguin will look wonderful on any vintage bookshelf. This title was originally comissioned by the Left Book Club and they asked for George Orwell to explore the coal areas of Lancashire and Yorkshire at a time of mass unemployment. The following excerpt is taken from the beginning of the book - On the day when there was a full chamber-pot under the breakfast table I decided to leave. The place was beginning to depress me. It was not only the dirt, the smells, and the vile food, but the feeling of stagnant meaningless decay, of having got down into some subterranean place where people go creeping round and round, just like blackbeetles, in an endless muddle of slovened jobs and mean grievances. - shocking to this very day. Don't overlook this classic title.
