Reader's note

A wonderful copy of Decline of the English Murder and Other Essays by George Orwell. This book collects ten of George Orwell’s essays on various subjects. Included are commentaries on real and fictional crime, and an account of a hanging in Burma. Orwell also writes his thoughts on other artists, Charles Dickens, Rudyard Kipling and Salvador Dali. Lastly is the essay ‘Why I Write’, his journey to becoming a writer and his motivations and ambitions; essential reading for any admirer of George Orwell’s works. ‘Writing a book is a horrible, exhausting struggle, like a long bout of some painful illness. One would never undertake such a thing if one were not driven on by some demon whom one can neither resist nor understand.’
