Reader's note

If it is permissible to regard George Orwell as a political seismograph, Coming Up For Iar nicely records the quaking confusion of England in 1939. War overshadows every chapter. The fear of it forces george Bowing, a very ordinary suburban Englihsman of forty-five, to go back in his mind to that other ‘before-the-war’ - to the peace of his childhood in a small country town. In retrospect it seems to him that his active life ended when he was sixteen; the First Word War, eighteen years in insurance, marriage to the joyless Hilda - these have been no more than death in life. Suddenly he is struck by the bold idea of revisiting the scene of his boyhood. Such a visit will feel like coming up to air. But in the event it is certainly no more than that. For the journey to Lower Binfield sells complete disillusionment, and George Bowling settles once more into the ooze of routine and frustration, with the show of Ninety Eighty-Four looming up in the distance.
