Reader's note

Add some deep red to your bookshelf with this second volume of Middlemarch! This novel, though one of George Eliot's later novels, has that masterly psychological insight which marks 'Adam Bede' and the earlier books. A critic has described it as 'a history of the intelligentsia in the nineteenth century'; and certainly the intellectual lineaments are there drawn on a liberal, yet very intimate, scale. Arnold Bennett said once that every real novel was more or less autobiographical: Middlemarch, written with the fire of deeply felt emotion and personal experience, is no exception to the rule. This book is the perfect literary gift for the person who appreciates ground-breaking classical fiction.
