Reader's note

Add a classic vintage Penguin to your collection with this 1962 edition of Exile and the Kingdom by Albert Camus. These six stories show the same qualities that won a Nobel Prize for Literature for Albert Camus. Four of them are set in Algeria on the fringes of the desert - an environment which has often been associated with deep mystical and emotional experience. 'The Renegade' shows the great French novelist at his most intense , as he disturbingly uncovers the slave mentality of a missionary, reduced by torture to treachery. At the other extremes 'The Artist at Work' is a gay and ludicrous satire on the pitfalls of artistic success.
