Reader's note

This wonderful old book is a must-read for any fan of George Eliot! This title consists of a collection of essays first published in the 1800s by various magazine including the Westminster Review and Fraser's Magazine. It also includes 'Leaves from a Notebook' In which George Orwell discusses the Judgements of Authors and Storytelling. The following extract is taken from the Address to Working Men by Felix Holt - Fellow-Workmen: I am not going to take up your time by complimenting you. It has been the fashion to compliment kings and other authorities when they have come into power, and to tell them that, under their wise and beneficent rule, happiness would certainly overflow the land. - find out what this anarchic character has to say next! A wonderful antiquarian collection that more than deserves your attention.
