The edict of Nantes in 1598 proclaimed the principle of toleration in matters of religion and gave Protestants liberty of conscience, freedom of worship to a certain degree, entry into schools and other privileges previously denied to them. But this state of affairs gradually deteriorated until in 1685 Louis XIV revoked the Edict. Though forbidden to leave the country under extreme penalty, thousands of followers of the reformed faith fled to England, bringing with them many of France's manufacturing secrets.
