Reader's note

A fantastic 1963 edition of Ernest Hemingway’s For Whom the Bell Tolls! This book is magnificently told... Only four days out of the whole civil war, only a few peasants in their cave - yet it seems as if all Spain and all its troubles were here, and it is impossible not to admire the manner in which this immense feat has been accomplished. You are, indeed, moved and held. There are passages of terrific power, narratives almost unbearable in their brutality, scenes of passion between Jordan and the girl Maria rarely equalled for verbal beauty, tales of the bull-ring, the last stand of El Sordo's band trapped in the mountains, the agonised suspense of the bridge-blowers awaiting the signal.. the book is a literary exploit that will link Hemmingway's name to the Spanish War for many years to come.
