Brontë’s classic gothic novel concerns the wild and destructive love between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw. The orphan Heathcliff was adopted by Catherine’s father long ago, but he runs away believing his love to Catherine unrequited. He returns years later with money and status, and intention to inflict his revenge upon everyone who slighted him in the past. ‘If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger: I should not seem a part of it.’
