Reader's note

While on holiday in Monteriano, the widowed Lilian Herriton marries a young Italian leaving her dead husband's family aghast. Lilia dies in childbirth and the family decide that her son must be saved from his disreputable father, Gino. With a masterly combination of pathos and comedy, Forster contrasts the father’s passionate love for his child with the aridity of the English middle class conscience and against the background of the beautiful Italian city he depicts the tragedy which arises when two cultures clash.
