Reader's note

A decorative edition of Elephant Walk by Robert Standish! In this wonderful book, the author has given us escape from present to past realities. Time has mellowed some of the harsh lines of his story. He now writes tolerantly of the evil in his characters and understandingly of their simple virtues, so that the story, like good wine, has improved by keeping. If it had been written when fresh in the author's mind, George Carey would have become a merely ridiculous figure, instead of the kindly, endearing figure revealed here. His wife, Ruth would have been just as unfaithful wife, whereas as now portrayed her infidelity seems of less importance than her unhappiness. Parallel with these human lives is the story told with great insight and sympathy, of a bull elephant, whose destiny is linked with that of the Careys.
