Reader's note

In early life the string of Poe’s hopes and fortunes similarly appeared to lead to wealth and contentment. It is true that he was left, at two years of age, one of the young orphan children of players. But he was adopted by John Allan, of Richmond, Virginia, a wealthy Scottish merchant, and soon began to be spoilt by the adoring and childless foster-parents. The AllanS came to England when the boy was seven years old; and for five years he was educated at Stoke Newington. It was a ‘misty-looking village of England…’ This environment and the friendliness of his boyhood years had a deep effect on Poe’s character - just as they influenced his writings.
