John Sebastian Lafcadio was a great artist, and he knew it, but he wanted to make quite sure that future generations would appreciate that fact as well, so he painted a number of pictures about which very few people knew about. He ordered that ten years after his death these pictures were to be exhibited one by one, year after year. This one-picture exhibition became very fashionable, and so it was that one spring afternoon when the eighth picture was being exhibited for the first time, a number of well known people gathered. It was when the lights failed for a few minutes that one amongst them stabbed young Peter Dacre, which no one realised clearly what had happened for some time afterwards…
