Reader's note

A small, wonderful copy of De Profundis. Oscar Wilde wrote De Profundis (From the Depths) while imprisoned in Reading Gaol, to his lover Lord Alfred Douglas or “Bosie”. In this 50,000-word letter he recounts their relationship and the lifestyles they lived which eventually led to his conviction as he describes both Douglas’ vanity and his own weakness. Part of the letter describes his own spiritual journey during the ordeal and how his soul has reacted to the hardships. ‘I have said to you to speak the truth is a painful thing. To be forced to tell lies is much worse.’
