Reader's note

This charming little pocket-sized book is a well-loved classic by Susan Cooper. ‘Gosh!’ Derek said, hopping in delight, his gas mask banging at his back. ‘Gosh!’ ‘Fighters, our fighters!’ Peter waved madly at the sky. ‘Look!’ Then an urgent hand came down and Mrs Wilson dragged them off to the shelter. ‘You stupid boys, come under cover at once! Derek’s father was right , Derek really wasn’t old enough yet to be frightened of the war. All war meant to him was the excitement of plane-spotting, the hope of finding a piece of shrapnel after a raid, strange uncomfortable nights cramped into an air-raid shelter and hero-worshipping the boys who were old enough to fight. This is a lovely classic story that would make a wonderful addition to any home collection.
